Coming off a quick, successful two-game road trip, the Philadelphia Flyers (8-5-2) looked to carry that momentum on home ice at the Xfinity Mobile Arena this afternoon, but fell short. They battled back from a rough first period in which the Ottawa Senators (7-5-3) took a 2-0 lead; however, Philadelphia could not finish the job, settling for one point from the overtime loss.
First Period
Shots: 6-4, Senators
Score: 2-0, Senators
Taking control almost immediately, the Senators made the most of their possessions. Tim Stützle put Ottawa on the scoreboard, 1-0, with 14:46 remaining in the first period. Ridly Greig was in pursuit of the puck, beating Bobby Brink in a puck battle down low, moving the puck to David Perron. Perron set up Stützle for the one-timer, where the puck hit Sam Ersson in the facemask, then bounced off the post, and into the net.
It only took 1:05 for the Senators to double their lead. Michael Amadio went uncontested through the slot, taking a slick pass from Claude Giroux. He finished with a backhanded shot, 2-0, with 13:41 remaining in the first period.
Each team went on the power play. Artem Zub served a minor penalty for slashing, then Emil Andrae served a minor penalty for interference. Noah Cates heard his name called on special teams, notching shots on goal and clearing the defensive zone to help Ersson. The Flyers didn’t convert on the power play, but they killed penalties, which served equally important.
Second Period
Shots: 14-11, Flyers
Score: 2-1, Senators
Recently, the theme is that it takes until the second period for the Flyers to find their game. They returned with much more energy, finding their legs and a little fire. Things started to get chippy between the two clubs, too. Nick Cousins served a minor penalty for slashing, but Philadelphia finished 0/2 (0%) on the power play.
“Really [have] got to be happy for the guys that they’re not giving up, right? In our starts; the Nashville [Predators] start, this start, I [have] got to do a better job of getting the team ready because we’re chasing after that. We obviously didn’t like our first, and then after that, it’s a good hockey team. Was it three shots the last two periods? That’s hard to do against anybody. Ottawa [Senators] is a good team.” – Rick Tocchet; 11/8/2025
Shortly after, Greig and Travis Konecny each served simultaneous penalties. Greig served for interference and Konecny for roughing, resulting in four-on-four hockey.
Matvei Michkov woke up the Xfinity Mobile Arena. He circled up the wall, protecting the puck from Jake Sanderson. He snapped his shot past Linus Ullmark, 2-1, with 8:37 remaining in the second period. Michkov cut the deficit in half. This goal was a much needed spark for Michkov, who has goals in consecutive games.

Dylan Cozens delivered a massive hit on Noah Juulsen. Juulsen got up and retaliated, leading to matching minor penalties. Cozens served for boarding while Juulsen served for roughing. However, four-on-four hockey didn’t result in any more scoring.
After Michkov scored, the Senators didn’t register another shot on goal in the second period.
Third Period
Shots: 22-12, Flyers
Score: 2-2
Despite heading to the penalty box to serve a minor penalty for tripping, Michkov had one of his best games of the season earlier today versus the Senators. The Flyers’ penalty kill came up strong to keep it a one-goal game. From there, Philadelphia carried the play, spending a lot more time on the attack. They were pressing hard for the equalizer.
“It’s probably as best as he’s [Matvei Michkov] skated this year. I feel him playing the left side, it’s making him play faster. It’s making him go forward instead of, when you’re offside sometimes you take the puck back. I think he’s playing forward and he looks faster.” – Rick Tocchet; 11/8/2025
Jamie Drysdale cashed in, 2-2, with 10:05 remaining in the third period. Zegras fired from the point, and the puck deflected off Christian Dvorak. Drysdale took advantage of the gracious bounce, scoring on Ullmark, who was already on his back.

Ersson denied Cozens late in the third period. The Senators went more than 20:00 without a shot on goal. The Flyers clamped down since the first period, forcing overtime.
Overtime
Shots: 22-13, Flyers
Score: 3-2, Senators
No shots on goal for the Flyers in overtime. Overall, one shot on goal was taken between both clubs. That’s all it took.
This game began on the stick of Stützle and finished the same. Stützle buried his second of the afternoon, 3-2, with 1:41 remaining in overtime. He scored at the crease, finishing a feed from Drake Batherson.
“He’s [Trevor Zegras] got to then come to the bench hard. He was waving like he wanted to come off, but he wasn’t; you [have] got to be decisive. It was a tough play, but you either [have] got to come hard, or you got to stay on. Then, obviously, the two-on-one.” – Rick Tocchet; 11/8/2025
It’s a tough result after clawing back from a rough start; however, the Flyers deserve a lot of credit for salvaging a point. Their effort in the second and third periods were a major upgrade from the first.
