Flyers Sign Remaining RFA Hunter McDonald to 2-Year Contract

The Philadelphia Flyers have come to terms on a 2-year, two-way/one-way contract with restricted free agent defenseman Hunter McDonald, according to general manager Daniel Brière.

For McDonald, the second year of his contract is a one-way deal. The 24-year-old was their last remaining RFA after the club had previously signed Jamie Drysdale, Trevor Zegras, and Nikita Grebenkin earlier in the offseason.

After being drafted in the 6th round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, McDonald committed to Northeastern University where he potted 2 goals and 20 points in 58 games between 2022 and 2024.

He then spent the next 3 seasons with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, where he has scored 4 goals and 27 points in 147 games. He received two call-ups last year from the Flyers but only saw action in the final game of the season against Montréal, and he recorded his first career point with an assist in 15:11 TOI.

The stay-at-home defenseman will likely retain a major role for the Phantoms this upcoming season, but will be on the Flyers’ radar should injuries arise to their top-6. At 6’4” and 238 pounds, the left-shot defenseman fits the mold of what the Flyers are trying to build on the back-end of their defensive corps.
