The Philadelphia Flyers (8-5-3) start a back-to-back road trip beginning at Enterprise Center to take on the St. Louis Blues (6-8-3). The puck is scheduled to drop at 8pm/ET.
Philadelphia enters the matchup with a bitter taste in their mouths after letting what seemed to be a win against the Edmonton Oilers fall through their fingers. Travis Konecny scored the go-ahead goal with 23.5 seconds left in regulation, but the play was overturned after Owen Tippett was ruled offsides.
Déjà vu struck for the Flyers as they watched the opposition skate away with the extra point in consecutive outings. Philadelphia was mad when Ottawa’s Tim Stützle scored the game winner in overtime on Saturday and the Flyers were just as infuriated, if not more, as Edmonton’s Jack Roslovic ended the game this time around in overtime.
“It hurts. You stick with it with a team like that and think with 20 seconds left you win the game,” Tippett said. “Nobody knows on the ice that it’s offsides. It definitely stings.”
Now the Flyers find themselves leaving Xfinity Mobile Arena unhappy yet again and hoping to snag four points in these next two games out west.
Philadelphia’s counterpart tonight in St. Louis seems to have slowly gained traction. After dropping seven straight games, the Blues have picked up points in their last three contests while winning two of them. A lot of their recent success has to do with their goaltending.
Keeping the puck out of the net has been an issue for the Blues as they’re tied for fourth in the league by allowing 64 goals. However, the tandem of Joel Hofer and Jordan Binnington have played an active role in St. Louis breaking out of their skid.
Hofer had a 30-save shutout in Buffalo last Wednesday and Binnington stopped 38 of 40 shots in the win over the Calgary Flames during the Blues’ last game.
“I’m having fun. I just got to play for the love of the game at this point and remember why you started and just enjoy these moments because they’re special,” Binnington said.
For the Flyers and their 2.56 goals per game which ranks 30th, they must find some offense and a way to defeat St. Louis’ netminder.
The Flyers announced Sam Ersson will be between the pipes. Ersson had an uneventful game in his last start after seeing just 14 shots from the Senators. He has a 2-1-2 record with a 3.03 GAA and .866 SV%.
Philadelphia’s Player to Watch: Trevor Zegras
Zegras has yet to find the back of the net in six November contests after ending October recording four tallies and seven points in three games. The Blues’ penalty kill is 29th in the league. If the Flyers can draw a couple of penalties, Zegras can utilize his man advantage magic and create quality chances which might be the difference maker.
St. Louis’ Player to Watch: Jimmy Snuggerud
Playing on the first line and top power play unit, Snuggered has been getting his opportunity. Despite being a little snake bitten on the box score of late, Snuggerud’s lethal shooting ability and playmaking skill can generate offense and change the complexities of the game.
