Preview; Game 16/82: Philadelphia Flyers vs. Edmonton Oilers

(Heather Cattai/Heather Barry Images, LLC)

The Philadelphia Flyers (8-5-2) host the Edmonton Oilers (7-6-4) at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30pm/ET.

The Flyers will be looking to bounce back after a frustrating 3-2 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. After a disappointing showing in the first period, the Flyers quickly found themselves in a 2 goal deficit. While they were able to tie the game and force overtime, a line change miscue from Trevor Zegras ended up costing the Flyers the extra point.

“He’s [Zegras] got to then come to the bench hard. He was waving like he wanted to come off, but he wasn’t; you [have] got to be decisive. It was a tough play, but you either [have] got to come hard, or you got to stay on. Then, obviously, the two-on-one.” – Rick Tocchet; 11/8/2025

Despite the loss, the Flyers still earned a point on home ice, and were given three days of rest before facing Connor McDavid and the Oilers tonight. While McDavid’s reputation remains, the Oilers have had quite the slow start this season. After dropping three straight games last week, including a 9-1 thrashing from the Colorado Avalanche, they secured their second win in November against the Columbus Blue Jackets in dramatic fashion. After going down multiple goals in the early goings, McDavid dropped a highlight reel goal and then a second goal to force overtime. Jack Roslovic scored his 4th of the season and the game-winning goal to end their three-game losing streak.

Philadelphia Flyers

Fans, players, coaches, and the front office will be relieved to see Tyson Foerster draw back into the lineup. He remains a key piece for the future, and has 7 points (4g,3a) through 11 games. Foerster blocked a shot against Morgan Rielly on November 2nd, when the Flyers lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 5-2 defeat at home. This injury led to Foerster being placed on IR, and went on to miss four games. While he is a game-time decision, all signs point towards him playing tonight. Usually, when the coach says it is up to the player, the player chooses to play 10 out of 10 times.

“Yeah, I think it’s kind of his [Foerster] call in a sense. You know, a guy like Tyson will want to play. He’s only had one or two skates. Can you play with only two skates if you have been off for eight days? Yeah, you can. You also have think of the safety of the player. We’re taking that all in consideration. We’ll probably talk about it tonight, probably have a call about it tomorrow morning.” – Rick Tocchet; 11/11/2025

After nearly a week off, Dan Vladař (6-3-0) will return between the pipes. His previous game played was last Thursday, where the Flyers traveled to Nashville and defeated the Predators in a 3-1 victory. Vladař was arguably the biggest reason they won, stopping 23 of 24 shots. This season, he currently posts a 2.18 GAA, and a .917 SV%.

Sean Couturier has been paired with Trevor Zegras and Matvei Michkov during practice heading into tonight’s game. Michkov has scored goals in two consecutive games. Zegras has been on fire since game 1, registering 16 points (4g,12a) in 15 games. There is plenty of talent to go around in this potential combo ahead of tonight’s game.

“Obviously extremely talented, a lot of hockey IQ. So, we just got to find a way to get them the puck  and get open and create some time and space for them and go to the net. I think that’s the key with them. They’re going to make plays and I got to bring that big body to the net. ” – Sean Couturier; 11/11/2025

Team Stats

To absolutely no one’s surprise, the Oilers lead in most Team Stats per NHL.com. The Flyers do have a slight edge in their penalty kill, which ranks 4th in the league, compared to the Oilers who rank 9th. The biggest advantage heading into tonight’s game is their goals against per game. The Flyers rank 5th in the league with 2.60 goals against per game. The Oilers rank 27th, averaging 3.47 goals against per game. The Flyers will need the team defense and goaltending to continue their hard work as they face off against a generational talent in McDavid. While the Flyers have struggled registering shots on goal, and scoring in general, their opponent to their fortune struggles in this key area. It will be up to Flyers, ultimately, on how well they will execute in tonight’s game.
