Preview; Game 15/82: Philadelphia Flyers vs. Ottawa Senators

(Heather Cattai/Heather Barry Images, LLC)

The Philadelphia Flyers (8-5-1) host the Ottawa Senators (6-5-3) at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1pm/ET.

The Flyers return home after a successful road trip that saw them earn four points against Montréal and Nashville. However, they will be looking to rebound on home ice after dropping their last two at Xfinity Mobile Arena to Calgary and Toronto. The Senators, meanwhile, continue their road trip with a 2-1-2 record over their past five games, coming off back-to-back overtime losses in Montréal and Boston.

Special teams could play a big role in today’s game. Ottawa’s power play has been one of the league’s best, ranking 7th overall at 26%, while the Flyers’ penalty kill has been equally impressive, sitting 5th overall at 87.8%. It will be a battle of strength for these units if a Flyer finds himself in the box.

At even-strength, the Senators have struggled defensively, allowing 3.86 goals per game, the second-most in the NHL. While the Flyers’ offense ranks 25th with 2.71 goals for per game, they need to take advantage of Ottawa’s defensive lapses and find an early spark to get their offensive rolling.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers need their key players to heat up offensively, and ideally, all at once. Matvei Michkov broke a nine-game goal drought with his game-tying goal in Nashville, but Trevor Zegras has now gone four straight without a goal. Tyson Foerster, who is not yet back from injury, remains the only Flyer to score against Ottawa this season, scoring just 30 seconds into their October matchup. Philadelphia needs more contributions across the lineup to solve Linus Ullmark this afternoon.

Today will mark Sam Ersson’s first start since October 28 after recently returning from injured reserve. Ersson has a 2-1-1 record this season, with both wins coming in back-to-back shootout wins in late October. He enters the game with a 3.08 goals against average and a .876 save percentage, and after Dan Vladař’s strong recent performances, Ersson needs to match that level of play.

With Ersson’s return, the Flyers reassigned Aleksei Kolosov to Lehigh Valley. They also recalled forward Carl Grundström, acquired from San Jose in the Ryan Ellis contract deal. Grundström has three goals and three assists through 11 games with the Phantoms, and he will be making his Flyers debut this afternoon in place of Nic Deslauriers.

Ottawa Senators

It is always special when Claude Giroux returns to Philadelphia. Now on a one-year deal with Ottawa, the former Flyers captain may be nearing the end of his career. Giroux played exactly 1,000 games as a Flyer, recording 900 points, and has remained productive against his former team since moving on. In 10 games back in Philadelphia, he has 3 goals and 9 assists, including a point in October’s meeting. Giroux also found the back of the net on the power play in Ottawa’s loss to Boston on Thursday.

Former Flyer Olle Lycksell scored the game-winning goal, his only of the season, against the Flyers in that October matchup, but it appears he will be out of the lineup this afternoon. Meanwhile, Michael Armadio, who scored the game-tying goal in that same contest, will play today. He has some momentum with goals in his past two games and three goals in his last four.

Linus Ullmark is confirmed to start in goal for Ottawa. The veteran netminder holds a 5-4-3 record this season with a 3.36 goals-against average and a .863 save percentage. Despite his recent numbers, Ullmark has historically performed well against the Flyers, posting a 7-2-2 record, 2.63 GAA, and .915 save percentage against Philadelphia since 2015.
