The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenseman Spencer Gill to a three-year, entry-level contract, according to Flyers General Manager Daniel Brière.
Gill’s contract carries an average annual value (AAV) of $975,000.
Gill was selected in the second round at 59th overall by the Flyers in the 2024 NHL Draft. He spent the 2023-24 season with the QMJHL’s Rimouski Océanic in which he recorded 12 goals and 34 assists for 46 points in 65 regular season contests. Gill also notched 5 assists in as many postseason games for Rimouski.
Gill appeared in both games of the Flyers’ Rookie Series against the New York Rangers, notably racking up an assist in Game 1 on Alexis Gendron’s deflection goal and making a strong defensive play on an empty-net attempt to eventually help the Flyers force overtime.
The 18-year-old also appeared in the Flyers’ preseason opener on Sunday against the Washington Capitals, blocking 2 shots in 19:16 of action in the 6-2 victory.
Gill was one of 14 roster cuts made by the Flyers on Wednesday, but he made a large impression on John Tortorella and the Flyers’ brass before leaving Training Camp.
“I thought [Spencer] Gill had a good camp. [He’s] a big, tall five-year-old that needs to grow into his body, right-handed defenseman. I thought he equipped himself very well.” – John Tortorella, 9/25/24
Gill will spend the 2024-25 campaign in Rimouski once again, but look for him to potentially make his professional debut in AHL Lehigh Valley at the end of the year once his QMJHL season comes to a close.
