The Philadelphia Flyers (22-13-8) were overpowered by the Tampa Bay Lightning (27-13-3) on Saturday night, falling 7-2 as Tampa Bay extended its winning streak to nine games. Despite stretches of competitive play, the Lightning’s offensive efficiency proved too much for the Flyers to overcome at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

First Period

Tampa Bay wasted no time opening the scoring, striking on its first shot of the game. Nikita Kucherov found space and made it look effortless, converting a feed from Brayden Point that came off the boards to give the Lightning an early 1-0 lead.

Luckily, the Flyers responded quickly. Just over two minutes later, Garnet Hathaway netted his first goal of the season, getting his stick on a shot from Noah Juulsen to deflect it past Andrei Vasilevskiy. Rodrigo Ābols picked up the secondary assist as Philadelphia tied the game at one.

Momentum did not last long, however. Kucherov struck again roughly two minutes later, snapping home a clean shot for his second of the period. Point and Charle-Édouard D’Astous recorded the assists as Tampa Bay regained the lead.

The physicality of the game became real apparent as Declan Carlile and Hathaway dropped the gloves after a heated exchange, with both players assessed five-minute fighting majors.

Philadelphia earned the game’s first power play at 13:13 when Brandon Hagel was called for interference. While the Flyers did not score, the unit showed good effort, highlighted by chances from Owen Tippett, Matvei Michkov, and Trevor Zegras, along with a strong keep-in play by Cam York.

York later headed to the box for cross-checking late in the period, but the Flyers’ penalty kill held firm, sending the game to intermission with Tampa Bay ahead 2-1.

Second Period

Tampa Bay carried 55 seconds of power-play time into the second period but failed to convert as the Flyers cleared the penalty effectively.

Hathaway continued to be a presence all over the ice. A post-whistle collision with Jake Guentzel escalated after Guentzel retaliated with a chop, following by additional shoving from James, but Hathaway stood his ground throughout the plays.

The Lightning eventually extended their lead despite Philadelphia’s strong effort. Nick Seeler made a massive block on an Anthony Cirelli shot, but the puck bounced right back to Tampa Bay, allowing Nick Paul to capitalize on the rebound. D’Astous and Cirelli earned the assists on the play, making it 3-1.

The goal felt deflating given how evenly the Flyers had played up to that point. The period remained chippy and physical, with bodies hitting the ice and tempers flaring. Sean Couturier nearly pulled the Flyers back within one after the puck landed on his stick in prime position, but Vasilevskiy came up with a key stop to preserve the Lightning’s two-goal advantage.

Third Period

Any hopes of a Flyers comeback were squashed early in the third. After a missed opportunity at one end, the puck quickly transitioned the other way, where Darren Raddysh found Kucherov, who then set up Gage Goncalves for a quick shot to extend Tampa Bay’s lead.

Just over a minute later, Hagel used his speed to beat Denver Barkey wide and slipped the puck past Sam Ersson at 3:37. Guentzel and Cirelli assisted on the play as the Lightning continued to rack them up.

Philadelphia did manage to respond on the power play after Goncalves was called for high-sticking at 4:13. Christian Dvorak won the faceoff cleanly, setting up Tippett for an off-speed slap shot that beat Vasilevskiy to make it 5-2.

Yanni Gourde converted on a short breakaway, beating Ersson cleanly for the Lightning’s sixth goal, with Zemgus Girgensons collecting the lone assist.

Exactly two minutes later, Goncalves scored his second goal of the night, finishing off a setup from Kucherov and Point. The Lightning did not even celebrate as they pushed the score to 7-2.

Hathaway was sent to the box for high-sticking against Carlile at 12:53, giving Tampa Bay its second power play of the night. The Flyers’ penalty kill came through once more, with strong efforts from Carl Grundström and Ābols helping kill off the chance.

Vasilevskiy finished the night with 18 saves on 20 shots for a .900 save percentage, while Ersson stopped 16 of 23 shots faced.
