Flyers, Trevor Zegras Come to Terms on Four-Year Extension

The Philadelphia Flyers have come to terms on a four-year extension with restricted free agent Trevor Zegras that is worth $9.125 million per season ($36.5 million total).

After filing for player-elected arbitration last week, the Flyers had until July 22nd to get a deal done before his hearing. Zegras now becomes the highest paid player on the team in terms of AAV, usurping Travis Konecny’s $8.75 million.

Zegras was acquired from the Anaheim Ducks last summer before the draft in exchange for Ryan Poehling and a second-round pick. He had struggled in his final two seasons with the Ducks, primarily due to injury, but had also fallen out of favour with then-head coach Greg Cronin.

In his first year with the Flyers, Zegras finished third on the team in goals with 26 and second on the team in points with 67, before pacing the attack in the playoffs with 6 points in 10 contests.

With Zegras in the fold, the Flyers have $20.44 million remaining in cap space to extend Jamie Drysdale and Nikita Grebenkin. Drysdale’s hearing is set for the 20th of July, but with Zegras’ deal now complete, look for an extension to get hammered out in short order.

The Flyers’ offseason has been a bit of a roller coaster after they didn’t do much of anything until the Leo Carlsson offer sheet. However, with an impending $18 million AAV possibly en route for the next five years, they had to put Zegras’ extension talks on the back burner.

The only surprise is that it was only four years in term, but after the Carlsson offer sheet, the RFA market had completely changed, and anything longer would have required a much larger AAV.

Zegras’ contract also includes a limited no-trade clause in the final two years of the deal.
