Closing out their six-game homestand, the Philadelphia Flyers (16-9-5) delivered a competitive performance against the Metropolitan Division leading Carolina Hurricanes (20-9-2), but a scoreless shootout through three rounds led to a 4-3 loss on Saturday night.
First Period
Sean Couturier opened his 903rd career game with a faceoff win, tying Bill Barber for third-most games played in Flyers history. Only Claude Giroux and Bobby Clarke have appeared in more games wearing the Orange and Black.
The Flyers took the first penalty of the game when Matvei Michkov was called for tripping, but the penalty kill delivered. Nick Seeler had a pair of strong clears, Couturier and Carl Grundström sprung loose on a 2-on-0 that nearly resulted in a shorthanded goal, and Sam Ersson made a key pad save on Seth Jarvis to keep the game scoreless.
Philadelphia’s strong start was eventually rewarded. Bobby Brink opened the scoring after sustained pressure, finishing a play set up by Trevor Zegras and Travis Sanheim.

The Flyers doubled their lead later in the period when Zegras buried a goal of his own, cashing in on a behind-the-back feed from Travis Konecny, with Jamie Drysdale picking up the secondary assist.

While the pace felt even, the numbers favored Philadelphia after 20 minutes. The Flyers led 7-5 in shots, 9-5 in hits, 4-1 in blocks, and won eight of the 12 faceoffs.
Second Period
The Flyers generated some early chances from Konecny, Zegras, and Noah Cates, but could not extend their lead.
Carolina responded midway through the period when Nikolaj Ehlers got the Hurricanes on the board off a feed from Shayne Gostisbehere.

Zegras was sent to the penalty box for delay of game later in the period, but Philadelphia’s penalty kill came through once again, holding Carolina without a single shot on goal during the two-minute advantage.
The Hurricanes controlled much of the second half of the period, forcing the Flyers into a defensive posture. Despite that, Philadelphia narrowly edged Carolina 9-8 in shots during the frame, while also leading in blocks (9-1) and faceoffs (13-9). Carolina, however, out-hit the Flyers 11-8 in the period.
Third Period
Couturier continued his dominance in the faceoff circle, winning the opening draw for the third period to improve to 3-for-3 on opening faceoffs on the night.
Play went back and forth until 12:26, when Jarvis broke in on a breakaway and beat Ersson to give Carolina its first lead of the game. Gostisbehere and Andrei Svechnikov earned the assists.

The Flyers wasted no time answering. Just 20 seconds later, Grundström tied the game at three, finishing a play set up by Rodrigo Ābols and Noah Juulsen. The goal marked Grundström’s second goal and third point in just four games as a Flyer, while Juulsen recorded points in back-to-back contests.

Both teams generated quality looks in the final seven minutes of regulation, but neither could find the winner, sending the game to overtime.
Overtime
The extra time marked Philadelphia’s 12th overtime game of the season. Chances came at both ends during the 3-on-3, with Zegras generating a dangerous opportunity and Ersson turning aside quality looks from Gostisbehere and Jordan Staal. The Flyers were fortunate to reach the shootout after multiple turnovers in overtime, an issue that also plagued them in Thursday night’s loss to Vegas.
Shootout
Neither team converted in the opening three rounds of the shootout. Zegras, Michkov, and Konecny were stopped for the Flyers, while Jarvis, Svechnikov, and Sebastian Aho were turned aside for Carolina.
In the fourth and final round, Pyotr Kochetkov denied Brink, but Ersson was beaten by Jackson Blake to seal the win for the Hurricanes. The loss marked Ersson’s first shootout defeat of the season after starting the year 4-0 in shootouts.
