After a strong win on Tuesday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (16-9-4) followed it up with a hard-fought effort against the Vegas Golden Knights (15-6-9), but ultimately came up short in overtime.

First Period

The Flyers came out with the kind of physical edge many were not sure they would be able to match against Vegas. Ty Murchison set the tone early with a heavy hit on Kaedan Korczak.

Despite the strong start, Vegas struck first when Zach Whitecloud beat Dan Vladař, with Ivan Barbashev and Braeden Bowman picking up the assists.

Even trailing, the Flyers were playing a solid period by finishing checks, blocking shots, and generating quality chances. Their best shift of the period came during an extended cycle in Vegas’ end, hounding Akira Schmid with multiple looks until it finally paid off. Trevor Zegras buried a great feed from Travis Sanheim, with Christian Dvorak grabbing the secondary assist. It was a beautifully executed sequence.

With just about 17 seconds left in the period, Barabshev was called for tripping, giving the Flyers their first power play of the night and nearly a full two minutes to start the second on fresh ice.

Second Period

Philadelphia could not take advantage of the carryover power play, but Vladař bailed them out soon after with big stops on both Jack Eichel and Barbashev to keep things tied.

Carl Grundström was called for holding later in the period, and Noah Cates nearly turned it into a shorthanded goal, but the Flyers settled for a successful kill.

Matvei Michkov had one of the Flyers’ best chances of the frame off a slick setup from Owen Tippett, but Schmid shut it down.

A too many men penalty proved costly when Mark Stone scored on the Vegas power play, assisted by Pavel Dorofeyev and Eichel, putting the Golden Knights back ahead.

Philadelphia got a power play opportunity of its own soon after when Dorofeyev went off for tripping, but the Flyers struggled to generate anything meaningful.

Fortunately, Noah Juulsen stepped up moments later with his first goal as a Flyer, a beautiful slap shot. Dvorak and Grundström collected the helpers.

Though it felt like Vegas controlled the period, the numbers were surprisingly balanced. Both teams registered nine shots on goal, and the Flyers actually led in hits, 8-7. Vegas, however, dominated the faceoffs, winning 10 of 16 faceoffs.

Third Period

The third period settled into a tight, grinding battle with chances at both ends. Vladař and Schmid matched each other save for save, keeping the game locked at 2-2.

Brett Howden’s elbowing penalty at 15:12 gave the Flyers a late power play, but they could not generate a shot on goal, finishing the night 0-for-3 on the man advantage.

Overtime

Tonight was the 11th time this season the Flyers entered overtime. They started strong with good early possession, but a bad bounce turned costly.

As Travis Konecny tried to transition up ice, the puck flew off his stick and Eichel quickly had it, feeding Stone for his second goal of the night. A tough break ended a hard-fought game.

Up Next

The Flyers host the Carolina Hurricanes at Xfinity Mobile Arena this Saturday, December 13. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm/ET.
