Fresh off a 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals in their return from the Olympic break on Wednesday, the Philadelphia Flyers (25-21-11) take on the New York Rangers (22-29-6) at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00pm ET.
Dan Vladař made 26 saves and Noah Cates scored the lone goal in last night’s contest. The Flyers started the game well and were outshooting the Capitals but the home team eventually took over play and prevailed thanks to a goal by Trevor van Riemsdyk with 5:52 remaining in the third period.
“Yeah there was some good stuff there,” said Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet postgame. “But you know, obviously four or five minutes left, I thought there was some sloppiness at certain points. I guess that happens after a couple weeks off. We kind of have a bad change and they get that goal. Obviously Vladdy played really well for us but we can’t give up those lateral goals. It’s really hurt us this whole month, so we’ve got to really dial that in.”
Luckily for the Flyers, they’re facing a Rangers team that puts up just 25.5 shots per game and 2.61 goals per game, both fewer than the offensively inept Flyers. Unfortunately, the Rangers excel in the faceoff dot at a 54.5% success rate (3rd in the league) and own a top-10 power play at 22.7% – two aspects of the game the Flyers struggle at.
Emil Andrae and Sam Ersson will draw into tonight’s lineup. Andrae will be making his first appearance since January 26th and Ersson will make his first start since January 29th.
