(Heather Cattai/Heather Barry Images, LLC)

In the final game before the Olympic break, the Philadelphia Flyers (25-20-10) host the Ottawa Senators (27-22-7) at Xfinity Mobile Arena, with puck drop set for 7pm/ET.

Ottawa enters the matchup coming off a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday, ending a four-game winning streak. During that stretch, the Senators were rolling offensively, averaging 4.4 goals per game while allowing just two, outscoring opponents 22-10. The Flyers have the opposite story. Philadelphia went 1-3-1 over their last five games, breaking a four-game losing streak on Tuesday, and were outscored 20-12 during that span.

Offensively, the Flyers are averaging 2.93 goals per game, trailing the Senators, who come in at 3.32 goals per game. Defensively, however, Philadelphia has the slight edge, allowing 3.18 goals against per game, compared to Ottawa’s 3.27. Shot volume also favors the Senators, who average 28.5 shots on goal per game, while the Flyers average 25.8.

The Flyers are tied for 18th in the league on the penalty kill at 78.9%, while the Senators rank 30th at 72.9%. Ottawa makes up for it with a dangerous power play, sitting 8th in the NHL at 23.2%, whereas the Flyers’ power play ranks 28th at 16.3%.

Previous Games

Thursday night marks the final matchup of the three-game season series between the Flyers and Senators, with Ottawa winning the first two meetings.

The series opened back in October in Ottawa, where the Senators earned a 2-1 win. Tyson Foerster scored just 29 seconds into the game. Ottawa responded later in the first period with a goal from Michael Amadio to tie the game, before former Flyer Olle Lycksell buried the eventual game-winner in the second. Dan Vladař got the start for Philadelphia and saved 31 of 33 shots, while Linus Ullmark stopped 22 of 23 for the Senators.

The two teams met again in November at Xfinity Mobile Arena, with Ottawa once again coming out on top, this time in a 3-2 overtime decision. Tim Stützle and Amadio gave the Senators a 2-0 lead in the first period, but the Flyers battled back. Matvei Michkov cut the deficit in the second, and Jamie Drysdale tied the game in the third to force overtime. The comeback fell short, however, as Stützle scored his second of the night 3:19 into the extra frame. Ullmark was solid once again for Ottawa, making 20 saves on 22 shots, while Sam Ersson stopped 11 of 14 for Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers will make a small lineup adjustment, as Nic Deslauriers comes out after recording his first assist of the season, with Garnet Hathaway set to re-enter the lineup. Sam Ersson was on the ice for the optional morning skate but will not dress as the backup, as Dan Vladař gets the start tonight. Emil Andrae will be scratched for a fifth consecutive game because Rick Tocchet and Todd Reirden want to keep the penalty-kill units unchanged.

Travis Konecny remains red-hot heading into the final game before the break. He is riding a four-game point streak, posting five goals and four assists over that span. Konecny is operating at a point-per-game pace this season (54 points in 54 games), which would project him to 81 points over 81 games, marking a new career high.

Vladař will be making just his fourth career start against Ottawa, owning a 1-1-1 record with an impressive .943 save percentage and 1.66 goals-against average against the Senators. This season, he holds a 17-8-5 record, along with a 2.49 GAA and .904 save percentage, as he looks to help the Flyers avoid a series sweep from the Senators.

Ottawa Senators

One area where the Senators have a clear advantage is in the faceoff circle. Ottawa ranks second in the NHL in faceoff win percentage (54.8%), including fourth-best on power-play draws and second-best while shorthanded. Leading the way is former Flyers captain Claude Giroux, who has been elite on draws once again. Giroux owns a 63.9% faceoff win rate this season and has taken 535 faceoffs, giving him the highest win percentage among regular, high-volume faceoff takers across the league.

Giroux signed a one-year deal with Ottawa this past offseason, making it possible that this could be his final season in the NHL. If so, Thursday night could mark his last appearance against Philadelphia.

Tim Stützle continues to be the star of the Senators’ offense. The German forward, who will represent his country at the Olympics, leads the team in points with 27 goals and 33 assists this season. At his current pace, Stützle is tracking toward an 88-point campaign, which would be his second-highest scoring season, behind his 90-point effort in 2022–23. He enters the night on a four-game goal streak and a six-game point streak, totaling five goals and four assists during that stretch.

In goal, Linus Ullmark is expected to get the nod once again. Ullmark has already beaten the Flyers twice this season, improving his career record against Philadelphia to 8-2-2, with a .915 save percentage and 2.56 GAA. Overall this season, he owns a 16-8-5 record with a 2.86 GAA and .884 save percentage. Since returning from a leave of absence for mental health reasons, Ullmark has been sharp, winning both starts with a 1.50 GAA and .919 save percentage.
