The Philadelphia Flyers (14-7-3) host the Pittsburgh Penguins (12-7-5) at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7pm/ET.

The Flyers enter tonight’s matchup riding a three-game win streak and winners of five of their last six. Meanwhile, the Penguins have managed just two wins in the five games since returning to North America after their stint in Sweden with the Nashville Predators.

Despite the Flyers holding the edge in the standings, the Penguins have been generating slightly more offense. Pittsburgh averages 3.08 goals per game on 27 shots, compared to Philadelphia’s 2.83 goals on 24.7 shots per game. Defensively, they are almost identical, each allowing 2.79 goals against on average.

The Flyers own the 4th-best penalty kill in the league at 85.15%, but the Penguins are right behind them in 5th at 84.8%. Pittsburgh’s power play is the biggest concern, though. The Penguins have the 2nd-best power play in the NHL, converting 30.4% of the time, while the Flyers sit 19th at just 17.5%. With the Flyers already totalling 261 penalty minutes this season, the 6th-most in the league, staying disciplined and out of the box will be crucial tonight.

Previous Matchup

The last time these teams met was back on October 28, when the Flyers beat the Penguins, 3-2, in a shootout. Bobby Brink had a power play goal in the first period, and Travis Konecny got his 200th career goal in the second. Both teams had goals overturned in OT which lead to tensions rising. It boiled over at the sound of the horn, with four players from each team receiving misconducts and becoming ineligible for the shootout. Sam Ersson stopped two of Pittsburgh’s three attempts, while Artūrs Šilovs got beat by both Matvei Michkov and Brink, giving the second point of the game to the Flyers.

Philadelphia Flyers

Within Metropolitan Division matchups, the Flyers have been successful. They are 5-0-1 against these divisional opponents so far.

The Flyers’ offense has been rolling lately, averaging 3.6 goals over their last five games, a stretch that even includes the lone shutout of the season against Tampa Bay. Defensively, they have been steady, allowing only 2.8 goals per game in that span.

Recently, we have seen impressive offense from Trevor Zegras with goals in back-to-back games and Owen Tippett and Matvei Michkov’s two goal performances in Saturday’s win against the Devils.

On the flip side, the Flyers need a bit more contribution from key guys. Brink has just 1 goal in his last 5 games and Konecny has not scored a goal since November 6. Travis Sanheim, Jamie Drysdale, and Cam York each have only 2 assists in the last 5 games.

Dan Vladař gets the start in net again tonight, looking to extend his personal four-game win streak. His strong play has carried him to a 10-4-1 record, tied for 7th in the NHL among goaltenders. Vladař has been especially solid on home ice, posting a 2.18 goals against average and a .920 save percentage at Xfinity Mobile Arena, compared to a 2.43 GAA and .912 SV% overall.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins have historically found offensive success against the Flyers, and shutting that down is necessary for Philadelphia tonight. Pittsburgh’s core stars, in particular, have consistently produced big numbers in this matchup.

Kris Letang has recorded 54 points against Philadelphia since entering the league in 2006-07, the most of any defenseman over that span.

Evgeni Malkin has been just as dominant. With 95 points in 78 career games against the Flyers, Philadelphia is his second-most productive opponent, trailing only the New York Islanders (97 points).

Sidney Crosby, too, has terrorized the Flyers for nearly two decades and comes into tonight’s game on a heater. Crosby has 3 goals and an assist over his last two games, and his goal against Toronto on Saturday was the 641st of his career, moving him into 15th on the NHL’s all-time goals list. He averages 1.48 points per game against the Flyers, with 57 goals and 78 points overall. His 57 goals are the most ever scored against Philadelphia by a single player.

The Penguins also made a pair of call-ups this morning, recalling Rutger McGroarty and Bokondji Imama from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. McGroarty, who missed training camp and the preseason with an upper-body injury, has come out strong in the AHL with 4 goals and 3 assists in 5 games. Imama, meanwhile, earns his first call-up of the season for his physical presence. He appeared in 16 games for Pittsburgh last year, scoring once while collecting 30 penalty minutes.
