The stage is set for the 2026 World Junior Championships with Sweden facing off against Czechia for gold and Canada facing off against Finland for bronze.

The Porter Martone-led Canadians entered the tournament as the favourites as they brought a star-studded lineup that had very few holes. They rostered three stout goaltenders, several top-flight defensemen including Zayne Parekh, and a forward group that was led by potential first overall pick Gavin McKenna.

The Czechs seemingly had their number as they troubled Canada in their tournament opening game, despite a 7-5 loss, before taking them down in another see-saw affair in the Semi-Finals. Canada had thumped Slovakia in the Quarter-Finals by a score of 7-1 and were hoping to avenge their previous losses to the Czechs, who have now defeated them in the knockout stages for the third straight year.

Martone, who captained Canada, has had a solid tournament with 5 goals and 8 points across 6 games. He leads the team in goals and could be needed again if Brady Martin is unable to play in the bronze medal game, after departing with an injury.

Jett Luchanko has had a quiet tournament with just one assist to his name, as it came on the power play in the Semi-Finals. It wasn’t the tournament that many were hoping to see out of the 2024 first round pick, but he had been relegated to fourth line duties since the second game.

Opposite the Canadians will be the feisty Finns, who lost in heartbreaking fashion via a shootout to the Swedes. They had previously eliminated the United States in overtime in the Quarter-Finals. Heikki Ruohonen and Max Westergård have both had fantastic tournaments with 7 and 4 points on the ledger, respectively.

As for the gold medal game, Jack Berglund‘s Swedes will be looking for their first gold medal since 2012, but will be in tough against Czechia, who have been an offensive juggernaut this tournament.

The Flyers‘ second round pick in 2024 has delivered with 3 goals and 8 points in 6 games, as he’s played a pivotal role in the top-6 and power play. Playing with potential first overall pick Ivar Stenberg, Berglund notched an assist on Sweden’s second goal of the game against Finland, while also being on the ice for another tally late in the second period.

Czechia will be going for their third gold medal and first since 2000 when they defeated Russia. It will also be their second appearance in the gold medal game since 2023, as well as their fourth straight medal finish, after earning bronze medals in back to back tournaments.

A bit surprisingly, the Swedes are playing for just their third goal medal in IIHF World Junior history as they claimed their first one in 1981 and then again in 2012. They’ve won the most silver medals out of any nation (12) with their most recent second-place medal coming in 2024 against the United States.

Canada continues to falter at the junior level, as they could go without a medal for the third straight tournament, should they fall to the Fins. They last captured gold in 2023 in what was consecutive championships, as well as their third in a four-year span.

Finland on the other hand will be looking to medal for the second straight year as they earned silver in 2025 and had a fourth-place finish in 2024. If they defeat Canada, it will be their 8th bronze medal all-time.

Canada and Finland have taken the ice, whereas the gold medal match between Sweden and Czechia is set for 8:30 PM (EST).
