Flyers travel to Toronto looking to avoid season sweep at hands of Matthews-less Maple Leafs

(Heather Barry Images, LLC)

The Philadelphia Flyers are looking to avoid being swept in the season series versus the mighty Toronto Maple Leafs. The Flyers will head to Toronto in the midst of another losing streak, this one is still less than half of our longest streak this year! The Leafs will be without top star Auston Matthews, per Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe. Matthews is having a historic season, scoring 58 goals and 102 points in 70 games. The Flyers lineup is still decimated by injuries and at this point becomes less predictable by the day. However the good news is that we only have six games left this season, and then it’s time to aggressively retool! Let’s take a look at this matchup.

News and Notes:

  • The last time the Flyers beat the Leafs was December 3rd, 2019. The Flyers stomped the Leafs 6-1, Philippe Myers tallied 3 assists and Claude Giroux, Travis Konecny, Scott Laughton, Shayne Gostisbehere, Joel Farabee, and James van Riemsdyk all scored one goal apiece.
  • Going back to the old school for this fun fact! During his Flyers tenure, Mark Recchi scored three overtime game-winners against the Maple Leafs. Two of them during the regular season (11/26/99 and 11/15/00) and one during the playoffs (4/16/03).
  • The Flyers and the Leafs have a long-standing trade history with one another. The first trade to take place between the two clubs happened way back on September 1st, 1967. The Flyers received Al Millar in exchange for cold hard cash. The most recent trade took place on March 23 of this year, where the Flyers received Brennan Mennell in exchange for fan favorite, Future Considerations.
