Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Daniel Brière has announced that they are hiring Patrick Sharp to the position of Special Assistant to Hockey Operations.

In statements from both the President of Hockey Operations and General Manager:

Keith Jones:

“In adding Patrick Sharp to our group, we are gaining an individual who has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to building an environment of winning at all levels. Patrick knows what it takes to win, he understands how to convey that to our players and is a relationship maker. He will be a vital component as we continue to build the foundation of the Philadelphia Flyers.”

Daniel Brière:

“I am proud to announce the addition of Patrick Sharp to our hockey operations team. Patrick is a well-established veteran on-and-off the ice and his incomparable hockey knowledge will be a valuable asset to our organization and young prospects.”

The former fourth round pick of the Flyers will report directly to Brière and his role with the club is described as being “involved in all aspects of the club’s hockey operations department with a strong focus on player development with Flyers prospects.”

It is expected to be a similar role that Brière was given when he was under Chuck Fletcher with an emphasis on the young players and prospects.

Sharp was drafted by the Flyers with the 95th overall pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. From 2002-03 to 2005-2006, Sharp spent parts of 3 seasons with both the Philadelphia Phantoms and the Flyers. He played in 163 games for the Phantoms and scored 52 goals and 114 points, while scoring 10 goals and 15 points in 66 games for the Flyers. He was traded to Chicago midseason alongside Erik Meloche for Matt Ellison and a third round pick and the rest was history.

Sharp spent the next 11 seasons in Chicago, playing in 749 games, scoring 249 goals and 532 points in the regular season on top of 80 points in 117 playoff games – including 11 goals and 22 points in 22 games in 2009-10 when they defeated the Flyers – where he ended up winning 3 Stanley Cups. He finished things off with 2 seasons in Dallas and ended a successful career with 287 goals and 620 points in 939 games. He also won the Calder Cup with the Phantoms in 2005, represented Canada at the World Championships in 2008 and 2012, and won Olympic Gold in 2014.

Since his retirement, Sharp spent the last 5 seasons in the broadcast booth for the Chicago Blackhawks, while also having a short stint as the Advisor to the coaching staff at the University of Vermont since 2021.

This hire represents another modern move from Daniel Brière and company as they look to herald in a new of era of orange.
