It’s been a fantastic All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas, and today the NHL wraps up their festivities with the 66th edition of the NHL All-Star Game. This is Las Vegas’ first time hosting the event and last night’s Skills Competition was a memorable one.

There were some new events, such as the Discover NHL Fountain Face-Off and the Las Vegas NHL 21 in ‘22, along with some regular events such as Fastest Skater, Save Streak and Hardest Shot. They even brought back the Breakaway Challenge, which was the highlight of the night with Trevor Zegras and Jack Hughes stealing the show in their attempts.

Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux participated in the Fountain Face-Off competition and was stopped by Jack Campbell in the Save Streak event as well. This is Giroux’s seventh All-Star appearance, which is tied for Bill Barber for second in Flyers history. The Flyers captain leads his team in assists (20) and points (35), and speaking of captaincy, he will be wearing the “C” for the Metropolitan Division today after Washington’s Alex Ovechkin was placed in COVID protocols and couldn’t participate this weekend.

Giroux’s Metropolitan All-Stars will play in the first game of the afternoon at 3:00pm ET when they take on the Pacific Division All-Stars, captained by Oilers center and superstar Connor McDavid. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the Atlantic Division and Central Division All-Stars in the final round to win $1,000,000 and bragging rights as NHL All-Star Game champions.

News and Notes:

– The Vegas Golden Knights and Tampa Bay Lightning each have three representatives at the event, the most of any team.

– Flyers captain Claude Giroux is playing in his 7th All-Star Game, which is tied for the most among any player at the event this weekend (Stamkos) and tied for third most among active NHL players.

– This is the first time since the format changed to 3-on-3 in 2016 that opposing conferences’ divisions will face off against one another in the first round. Before this year’s magical change, the two divisional teams in each conference would play each other in the first round.

– The NHL announced yesterday that next year’s All-Star Weekend will be held at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida, home of the Florida Panthers.
