All-Star: Claude Giroux participating in Fountain Face-Off at Skills Competition

With the NHL All-Star Game taking place in Las Vegas this year, there’s an opportunity to be creative and take advantage of what Sin City has to offer. As part of the festivities, the Skills Competition will feature some brand new events unique to the city. One of these new events is the Discover NHL Fountain Face-Off.

The Fountain Face-Off will take place literally inside the world-famous fountain in front of the Bellagio on the Las Vegas Strip. Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux and other participants will take a boat to the middle of the fountain to a platform, and then once on the platform they’ll try to shoot pucks into five targets in the quickest amount of time to try and win. All of this will come while dealing with the winds and waters in the fountain.

“Vegas is the perfect place and backdrop to do something outside the venue as well as inside, and we did a fair amount of research,” said Steve Mayer, the NHL chief content officer. “We settled on what we think is one of the most iconic spots in Vegas, and that’s the Fountains of Bellagio for one event.”

Giroux will participate in this event before suiting up as the captain of the Metropolitan Division All-Star team tomorrow afternoon. This is Giroux’s seventh appearance at the All-Star Game, and it’s his first time serving as captain due to Washington’s Alex Ovechkin ending up in COVID protocols two days ago. Giroux now stands tied for second in Flyers history in All-Star appearances. Franchise goals leader Bill Barber also has seven, while Bobby Clarke maintains the lead at nine.

The Skills Competition will begin at 7:30pm ET tonight and will be broadcast on ESPN, and the All-Star Game will be tomorrow at 3:00pm ET on ABC.
