The Philadelphia Flyers (29-23-11) will try to keep their extremely dim playoff hopes alive tonight as they host the Washington Capitals (32-26-7) at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm ET.
The Flyers are coming off an embarrassing 6-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Monday night at home. The loss dropped the Flyers to sixth in the Eastern Conference Wild Card race. They enter tonight nine points behind the Bruins for second in the Wild Card and ten points behind the Islanders for third in the Metropolitan Division. The lone positive from Monday’s game was Matvei Michkov continuing to impress at right wing, which is a surprise to nobody who’s watched him play. He racked up a power play goal and looked strong offensively again.
Dan Vladař struggled in his fifth consecutive start and will earn a much needed rest tonight. Sam Ersson will start for the first time since February 26th when he made 24 saves in the Flyers’ 3-2 road victory over the Rangers. He made 3 saves in relief of Vladař on Monday.
This is the third of four meetings between the Flyers and Capitals this season. In their last time out against each other, Washington won 3-1 at Capital One Arena in both teams’ first game out of the Olympic break on February 25th. Since the season resumed after the Olympic break, Philadelphia has gone 4-3-0 and have not won in regulation since February 28th against the Bruins.
