Preview; Game 60/82: Philadelphia Flyers at Toronto Maple Leafs

Coming off a gutsy 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday, the Philadelphia Flyers (27-21-11) take on the Toronto Maple Leafs (27-24-9) at Scotiabank Arena on Monday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm ET.

The Flyers didn’t put together their best offensive showing last game, mustering just 17 shots on goal, but three of them found twine and Dan Vladař was tremendous at the other end, making 26 saves.

”I think, structurally, both teams didn’t really give up a lot and when we did, or when they did, both goalies played – had some great saves. But overall, I liked our game,” said Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet.

The Flyers are averaging just under 22 shots per game since the Olympic break wrapped up, but they’ve won two of their three games since despite scoring just seven total goals in that stretch. A few of Philadelphia’s heavy hitters have contributed on the scoreboard, but they simply need more contributions. Noah Cates, Matvei Michkov, Trevor Zegras, Travis Konecny, Jamie Drysdale, and even Sean Couturier have found the back of the net in that time, but Owen Tippett, Bobby Brink, and Christian Dvorak are a few who haven’t. Dvorak has still contributed in the way of assists and has made some fantastic plays since the break, but the Flyers won’t get very far if they can’t score goals.

With the Trade Deadline approaching on Friday and the playoff picture taking better shape with each passing day, the Flyers will have tough decisions to make as they currently sit six points behind Boston for the final Wild Card spot in the East. A win tonight would give Philadelphia three consecutive victories and put them just four points behind as a result in their second-to-last game before Friday’s deadline, but it will also result in even more question marks surrounding the team’s future. They’re a team that desperately needs to win faceoffs and consistently find offense. Their special teams are middling at best and they’ve only received consistent goaltending from one of their two goalies. It seems evident that the front office would prefer if this team made the playoffs, but do they have the firepower to do so? And will they receive reinforcements via trade even though they’re still supposedly in a rebuild?

That being said, over the last three games since returning from the Olympic break, the Flyers have received consistently good goaltending from both of their goalies in Vladař and Sam Ersson, something that would be welcomed for the rest of the season. Vladař posted a .929 SV% on Wednesday in Washington, Ersson posted a .917 SV% on Thursday in New York, and Vladař posted a .963 SV% on Saturday against Boston. Vladař will get the call again tonight as he looks to keep his game at a high level and keep the Flyers afloat in the standings.
