The Philadelphia Flyers (24-20-9) host the Los Angeles Kings (22-17-13) at the Call Center (Xfinity Mobile Arena) at 12:30pm/ET.
Although the Flyers and Kings both earned the same number of points (57) in the NHL Standings, things couldn’t be much more different for the opposing clubs lately. Philadelphia is 1-3-1 and outscored by opponents, 23-17, over the last five games. Los Angeles is the more competitive team over the last five games (3-1-1), but isn’t quite lighting up the scoreboard (14-14).
Frustration has settled in for the Flyers. The buzzword that would carry more weight if the evidence were conclusive on the ice is ‘culture.’ Dan Hilferty, per a memorandum sent to Season-Ticket Holders, praised the ‘culture.’ However, after Philadelphia dropped a sound decision to the Boston Bruins, 6-3, comments from the leadership group didn’t match the praise Hilferty sang about the ‘culture.’ Internally, there’s pressure to achieve a postseason berth from leading point producers who are tired of losing and missing the playoffs.
It’s not that the Flyers are folding. At optimum health, they could reach the ceiling of a postseason berth. If the right piece falls, so would Philadelphia. They’ve crashed back into reality lately, and at the NHL Trade Deadline, they’ll be late sellers.
Much like their matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Kings offer the Flyers a real chance to get back into the win column. They need to lock in on home ice.

Philadelphia Flyers
Daniel Vladař (16-8-4, 2.49GAA, 90.4%SV) is the probable starter. Philadelphia recalled Alexei Kolosov from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for back up. Vladař relieved Ersson in the third period, saving 6/6 shots on goal in 19:46TOI before Marat Khusnutdinov scored an empty-net goal after Rick Tocchet pulled Vladař for an extra forward.
Travis Konecny (21G, 29A, +8, 18:49ATOI) remains an interesting watch. He’s white-hot, totaling seven points (4G, 3A) over his last five games, including a hat-trick against the Blue Jackets. Voicing his frustration adds another layer in paying attention to his play, particularly because he’s one of the voices of leadership on a team that loves its ‘culture.’ Konecny will play his 699th career regular-season NHL game in the 12:30pm/ET tilt.
Rasmus Ristolainen (3A, -6, 19:31ATOI) and Noah Juulsen (1G, 8A, +3, 14:07ATOI) have struggled lately. Ristolainen struggles to consistently stay healthy and in the lineup. Juulsen, while in the lineup, has had a string of rough performances. Advanced metrics may not paint the Flyers’ defensive unit in a terrible light, but lately, they’re not playing well in front of their goaltending, which, except for Vladař, is a separate can of worms. In a matchup where special teams success is relatively even, Ristolainen has to step up on the penalty kill in the same way he did with Nick Seeler (2G, 5A, -3, 18:57ATOI) in Boston.
