Fresh off an excruciating loss to Columbus on Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (24-19-9) visit the Boston Bruins (31-20-3) as they try to regain some momentum in the standings. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm ET at TD Garden.
The Flyers, despite a Travis Konecny hat trick and 26 saves from Dan Vladař, fell 5-3 to the Blue Jackets and are now losers of 9 of their last 11 games. Philadelphia has lost ground in the Eastern Conference standings as a result, falling six points behind the New York Islanders for third in the Metropolitan Division and eight points behind tonight’s opponent for the second Wild Card spot in the East.
“We have five defense right from the beginning, that’s hard,” said Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet after the loss in Columbus. “The guys battled hard, our D battled hard. TK obviously had a great game. We battled hard. Obviously the winning goal is something that leaves a sour taste in your mouth. Couple mistakes. That’s the one. Three minutes left, if we hang tight there, get it to overtime, at least grab a point. So that’s a tough one for us.”
It’s going to get even tougher against a Bruins team that’s won 8 of their last 10 contests and has won 20 of 29 home games this season. TD Garden has never been kind to the Flyers, but it rings true especially recently. The Flyers have won just twice in their last nine trips to Boston. In four of their seven losses in that span, they’ve been beaten by three or more goals.
Hopefully Sam Ersson can put those demons to rest tonight. The last time the Flyers won at TD Garden, Ersson picked up a 25-save shutout in a 2-0 victory on October 29th, 2024. Ersson has a .947 SV% and 1.30 GAA at Boston over two appearances and will start tonight for Philadelphia.
Besides their goalie having to step up, the Flyers will need two other things to happen in order to win. They need their stars, sans Konecny, to finally show up, and they need to slow down the Bruins’ dynamic duo up front.
Trevor Zegras has scored a goal in just three of the Flyers’ last 18 games and has none in six games. He is also on a three-game point drought, tied for a season-worst. Owen Tippett had a three-goal, four-point performance against Colorado last week, but that’s the only time in his last seven games that he’s found the back of the net. Matvei Michkov has goals in just two of his last 16 games played despite an increase in shots on goal and a general improvement in his game as of late.
On the other side, David Pastrňák is riding an 8-game point streak and has 20 points in his last 10 games. Morgan Geekie just eclipsed the 30-goal mark and is on a 5-game point streak. Those two have been the straws that have stirred Boston’s drink all season long and they’ll keep at it tonight. Pastrňák has 26 goals and 19 assists in 34 meetings against the Flyers. If they can somehow mark him all game, they’ll have a shot at a much-needed victory.
