The Philadelphia Flyers (6-4-1) host the Calgary Flames (2-9-2) at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7pm/ET.
The Flyers’ three-game win streak came to end last night in Philadelphia. While the score was not reflective of the Flyers efforts, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Flyers in a 5-2 final.
The Flyers will look to quickly turn the page against a lowly Flames club. They may not have their legs, but this is the kind of team you want to play on the backend of a back-to-back. Calgary is on a 3-game losing streak and are desperate to get back into the win column. They rank 32nd in scoring (2.15 goals per game), and 28th on the power play (14%). They struggle in goal prevention as well, ranking 26th in goals against (3.54 goals against per game), but have done a good enough job on the penalty kill at 18th in the league (76.9%).
By all measures of the team stats on NHL.com, the Flyers are the superior team. The Flyers rank 24th in goals for (2.73), and 19th (19.4%) on the power play. On defense, the Flyers rank 6th in the league in goals against (2.64), and 2nd on the penalty kill (90%). Additionally, the Flyers are a better faceoff team at 16th in the league (50.6%) compared to Calgary at 27th (46%).
Calgary is also on a back-to-back as well, but on the road. After their 4-2 loss in Nashville just last night, the Flames had to fly in to Philadelphia immediately. Point being, this will be a battle of two tired clubs, but one of them has the advantage of doing it from home.
Former Flyers Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost return to Philadelphia in tonight’s game. Frost has 7 points (2g, 5a) in 13 games this season. Farabee has 6 points (2g, 4a) through 13 games this season. It has been a slow start to the year for Farabee, but he might be heading back on track to be the player he once was in Philadelphia when he was at his best. Through his last 4 games, he has had a point in each game, scoring 2 goals and 2 assists.

The Flyers hope that captain Sean Couturier will be available for tonight’s game after leaving Thursday night’s 4-1 victory against the Predators in the first period due to an upper-body injury, due to an unfortunate friendly-fire from a Noah Juulsen shot.
Flyers fans have been banging their fists on the table for Trevor Zegras to play at center. Well, that certainly happened last night. Zegras was regularly creating scoring chances. He had an assist on their first goal and a double-post off of a one-timer. The issue? Faceoffs, and it was real bad. Zegras finished the night with a 14.2% on the faceoff dot, winning just 2 of 14 faceoffs last night. Faceoffs are not the “end all be all”, but even the biggest advocates who want him at center knows this is unacceptable. We’ll see if Couturier draws back in the lineup, and/or if Rick Tocchet can give Zegras another chance at center.
Aleksei Kolosov will likely get the start tonight. Kolosov has had an interesting start to his career in the Flyers organization to say the least. However, by all accounts, he sounds like he has been doing well in Allentown. This is great news considering all of the noise that surrounded him and the Flyers last season. He has also been legitimately good for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms this season. Through 5 games, Kolosov holds a 3-2 record, averaging 2.60 goals against and a .920 SV%. Coming in against a struggling NHL team, this will be a great opportunity for him to show why the Flyers have been so high on him.
