At pick #40, their second pick in the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers added a dynamic offensive weapon in Jack Murtagh, a forward from USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.
Murtagh, a 17-year-old from East Greenbush, New York, stands at 6’0” and 198 pounds. Known for his ability to score in big moments, he put up 22 goals and 31 assists for 53 points in just 56 games with the NTDP U-18 team, all while missing part of the season due to a shoulder injury.
During the 2024-25 season, he led the team in power-play goals and tied for the lead in game-winning goals, proving to be a clutch presence all year long. He also led the NTDP in scoring during games against NCAA opponents, posting 16 points in 18 games.
His strength and skill turned heads all season long, and some even believed he had the tools to sneak into the first round which makes this pick at #40 feel like potential steal for the Flyers.
Greg Moore, head coach of the NTDP U-18 team, called Murtaugh a “pure goal-scorer” and praised his ability to make plays under pressure, describing him as powerful, explosive, and capable of complementing high-end playmakers.
His play style also earned him a spot on Team USA’s roster at the 2025 IIHF U18 World Championship, where he helped the team secure a bronze medal.
Another bonus for the Flyers: Murtagh played on the U-17 NTDP team alongside Carter Amico, who Philadelphia selected just two picks earlier at #38.
Murtagh is committed to Boston University for the 2025–26 season, where he will continue his development. While he’s capable of playing center, he thrives on the wing, where he can use his speed and strength to create offense off the rush.
With a strong shot, high compete level, and clear passion for the game, Murtagh fits the mold of a Flyers prospect: tough, skilled, and hungry to make an impact.
