Flyers Execute Minor-League Trade, Acquire Christian Kyrou

(Texas Stars/X)

It’s been a relatively busy day for the Philadelphia Flyers as they embark on game three of their five-game homestand against the Nashville Predators later tonight.

The club recalled goaltender Aleksei Kolosov with Samuel Ersson having been placed on IR after suffering a lower-body injury on Wednesday. Additionally, there were rumours swirling about Jett Luchanko possibly being moved from Guelph to Windsor in the OHL, as he could join fellow prospect Jack Nesbitt for the rest of the 2025-26 season.

As for the Flyers, they executed a trade of their own, sending Samu Tuomaala to the Dallas Stars for defenseman Christian Kyrou. GM Daniel Brière also reported that Kyrou will report to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

The young brother of Blues forward Jordan Kyrou, Christian was drafted in the second round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft out of Erie. The Toronto native recorded 60 points in 68 games during his draft year before improving to the tune of 77 points in 64 games split between Erie and Sarnia.

The 5’11”, 165-pound defenseman then joined the Texas Stars in the AHL in 2023-24, where he recorded 23 points in 57 regular season games and then an additional 7 points in 7 playoff contests. His 2024-25 season was cut short to just 36 games, but he still managed 15 points.

As for Tuomaala, things weren’t necessarily linear after he was drafted in the second round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. It took him several years to get going in the Finnish Liiga before making the jump to professional hockey for Lehigh Valley full-time in 2023-24.

The Finnish winger scored a combined 26 goals and 75 points in 115 games across the last 2 seasons, and had gone pointless in his first 3 games for the Phantoms this year.

The 22-year-old Kyrou joins a Flyers pipeline that already includes defensemen like Oliver Bonk, Hunter McDonald, Emil Andrae, Ethan Samson, Spencer Gill, and the recently drafted Carter Amico. He is one of the elder statesman of the bunch and should he succeed in short order, he could possibly be in line to make his NHL debut later this season.

However, the Flyers defensive corps is a little loaded depth-wise at the NHL level with the usual suspects in Andrae, Noah Juulsen, Adam Ginning, Egor Zamula, and even Rasmus Ristolainen trending towards a return in December.
