The Flyers had placed Ginning on waivers Sunday afternoon after his 2-week conditioning stint with the Phantoms had come to an end. With no room on the NHL roster, they had to place him on waivers, but were fortunate enough that no other teams put in a claim.
The 25-year-old had started the season out with the Flyers after a very strong training camp. However, with the influx of defenseman that were on the roster, Ginning only made 5 appearances before he became a press box staple.
In 5 games with the Flyers, Ginning didn’t record a point, held an even rating, didn’t accrue any PIM, fired 2 shots on goal, blocked 5 shots, finished 4 hits, and averaged a healthy 15:20 TOI. His best game came against the Florida Panthers on the 13th of October, where he skated 20:33 TOI in the 5-2 win.
Unfortunately, Ginning wasn’t able to provide the Flyers with anything they didn’t already have, especially on the left side. Nick Seeler remains a staple, Cam York has had a great resurgence after a down year in 2024-25, and Emil Andrae has played extremely well over the last few weeks after a topsy-turvy start to his season.
The former 2nd-round pick from the 2018 draft has found it difficult to traverse the NHL with only 16 games played over the lsat 4 seasons, compared to his 200 in the AHL. With the Phantoms, Ginning has registered 7 goals and 52 points to go along with 216 PIM in 200 games.
There was some belief that his placement on waivers meant that Rasmus Ristolainen is inching closer to a return. The Finnish defenseman has been out all season after undergoing surgery on his triceps at the end of last season.
There have been very few updates since the end of last year to this point, however Ristolainen has been seen on the ice, but a timeline for his return remains to be determined. His eventual return to the lineup should fortify the defense even further and more than likely relegate Noah Juulsen to the press box.
Nevertheless, should Ristolainen remain sidelined and injuries occur to any of the active defenseman, Ginning would likely be the next man up on a recall. Until then, the Linköping, Sweden native will look to develop his game further with the Phantoms, who are currently 3rd in the AHL Atlantic Division with an 11-6-1-2 record.
