With the regular season set to open up next week, the Philadelphia Flyers made headway towards finalizing their opening night lineup by cutting seven players off their training camp roster and placing another six on waivers.
Zach Aston-Reese, Cam Dineen, Nolan Foote, Carl Grundström, Danila Klimovich, and Jack Studnicka were the aforementioned six players placed on waivers, whereas Noah Powell, Riley Thompson, Spencer Gill, Hunter McDonald, Ty Murchison, and Carson Bjarnason were assigned to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and Matthew Gard was returned to the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds.
Of the waiver placements, the most surprising is Grundström, who played quite often down the stretch last year and is currently signed to a one-way contract. However, with such a sizeable amount of players on waivers, the Flyers more than likely felt like it was the right time since there’s a greater chance he clears.
If he clears now, the Flyers will then have the flexibility to either start him on their NHL roster or keep him in the minors. If they choose the latter option, and configuring for Denver Barkey‘s injury from Monday night, that opens up a roster spot for someone like Cole Knuble, who has made waves in training camp.
Had they waited a little longer, he might not have been apart of a bigger waiver group, allowing him to stand out more. In a few days time plenty of teams will have made massive cuts or could be looking for injury replacements.
There weren’t too many surprises for the players assigned to the AHL, but that leaves Knuble, Oliver Bonk, and Jett Luchanko with the Flyers with just two preseason games remaining against Boston tomorrow night and Washington on Saturday.
By then we will have figured out whether or not any of aforementioned trio have made the Flyers’ opening night roster before they start the season with Pittsburgh on the 30th and New Jersey on the 1st of October.
