Philadelphia Flyers forward Travis Konecny has been fined $5,000 for cross-checking New Jersey Devils defenseman Brendan Smith in Thursday’s 4-3 overtime loss.

The $5,000 fine is the maximum allowed under the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the fine goes towards the league’s Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Konecny gave Smith a cross-check with less than three minutes remaining in the third period, leading Smith to retaliate with a vicious two-handed slash across the left arm of Konecny.

Smith was assessed a two-minute minor penalty on the play while Konecny received no penalty. Tyson Foerster scored a power play goal as a result with 50.9 seconds left to force the game into overtime.

Smith had a hearing for the slash on Friday and received a two-game suspension from the NHL Department of Player Safety.

Konecny currently leads the Flyers in goals (12) and points (18) and will be back in action on Saturday when the Flyers visit the Pittsburgh Penguins.
