Xfinity Mobile Arena will host its final NHL game of 2025 tonight as the Philadelphia Flyers (17-10-7) take on the Vancouver Canucks (15-17-3). Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm ET.
The Flyers will not play at home again after tonight until after the New Year rings in. Philadelphia will host the Anaheim Ducks on January 6 when that happens.
The Flyers will try to get back on track tonight after another blown lead resulting in a loss on Saturday. Philadelphia held two separate two-goal leads on the New York Rangers, at 3-1 and 4-2, before the Rangers stormed back and won 5-4 in a shootout. The Flyers have now lost five of their last six games, four of them coming in overtime or shootout fashion. The “loser points” they’ve racked up have kept them in the first Wild Card spot in the East, but they can’t afford to give away wins in a tightly contested conference.
“I guess comparing this one to recent third periods, I thought this one was a little bit better,” said Flyers forward Trevor Zegras after Saturday’s game. “I think maybe just a couple mental breakdowns. Obviously that led to the goal that was bouncing around and then obviously they got one on the power play late to tie it up. But, I mean I thought we were playing better in the third than we normally have, so I mean, I guess that’s exciting but still not good enough.”
Zegras has a point. Even in the third period of last Tuesday’s win over Montréal, the Flyers were massively outplayed. Philadelphia responded with lackluster late-game efforts in Buffalo and Manhattan as well before tonight’s contest takes place. They need to clean up their mistakes and get back to playing a complete game. Their opponent tonight shouldn’t be taken lightly either when trying to do so.
The Canucks, who did trade away franchise defenseman and captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in a blockbuster deal on December 13, are riding a four-game winning streak coincidentally since the trade occurred. Vancouver does sit third-to-last in the West but are only six points out of a Wild Card berth. All four of those wins have come across Eastern Conference foes on the road as well (Devils, Rangers, Islanders, Bruins).
This will also be Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet’s first time coaching against the Canucks since he took over behind the bench in Philadelphia. Tocchet was Vancouver’s head coach from 2023 to 2025 and went 108-65-27. The Canucks were Pacific Division champions under Tocchet in 2024 with 109 points and advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Tocchet was awarded the Jack Adam Award as the NHL’s top head coach for his efforts that season.
