Preseason Preview: Flyers at Bruins

On Saturday, the Philadelphia Flyers (1-3-0) hosted the Boston Bruins (2-1). In a losing effort, 4-3, the Flyers iced a heavy NHL lineup in front of a home crowd. Tonight, Philadelphia will visit the Bruins at the TD Garden.

Similar to the Flyers at the Xfinity Mobile Arena, Boston will ice a heavy NHL lineup.

Tonight begins the last week of the 2025 NHL Preseason for Philadelphia. The lineup includes the bottom six, a possible backup goaltender, and an extended audition for the bottom pair of the Flyers.

Helge Grans was placed on waivers earlier today. The intention is that he’ll return to the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He did not impress in his appearances against the Montréal Canadiens, the Washington Capitals, and most recently, the Bruins. Ty Murchison could make his 2025 NHL Preseason debut.

Tyson Foerster will make his 2025 NHL Preseason debut, too. He’s recovered from a bicep injury. Rick Tocchet is well aware of how Foerster, Noah Cates, and Bobby Brink meshed on the third line last season under John Tortorella. Those forwards are in the lineup, and Tocchet will likely want a sneak peek before the start of the 2025-2026 NHL Regular Season. Expect that line, usually the third line in a full NHL lineup, to lead the way for the forward group.

“I heard a lot about that line last year, chemistry-wise, and even noticed, [and] it’s a small sample size [at] the morning skate; [if] you ask for something, they do it pretty detailed. They’re pretty detailed. Coaches love guys like that because it sets the pace. I’m excited to see Tyson [Foerster] play.” – Rick Tocchet; 9/29/2025

Daniel Vladař and Alexei Kolosov represent the goaltenders on tonight’s roster in Boston. Vladař is penciled in to back up Sam Ersson in the 2025-2026 NHL Regular Season. However, if we’re to base goaltending on the 2025 NHL Preseason, Vladař could complement Ersson instead of standing in as a defined second option.

Jett Luchanko cannot afford to blend in tonight. Rodrigo Ābols is being rewarded with his fifth consecutive game of the 2025 NHL Preseason. Tocchet continues to remain ‘intrigued’ by Ābols, who stood out in more than one way throughout these exhibitions. Surely, Luchanko has the speed to be noticeable, but if he cannot begin to make plays, he could find himself back on assignment in the OHL.

“I think he’s [Jett Luchanko] got to get a little more aggressive in his thinking offensively, too. You like the intelligence of thinking, but you can’t think too much. He’s got to have a mentality of ‘pass to him and a shot mentality.’ He’s looking to pass all the time, and I think if he does that, it’ll help him be aggressive on the offensive side. He hasn’t played a lot of games, so he needs reps. We got to get him a lot of reps and see where he goes. Obviously, there’s a lot to like about him.” – Rick Tocchet; 9/29/2025

Murchison is on tonight’s roster and has yet to compete in the 2025 NHL Preseason. The battle for the third defensive pair is wide open. Emil Andrae, Adam Ginning, and Egor Zamula are bidding for their opening night roles with Philadelphia. Dennis Gilbert and Hunter McDonald are on the fringe, while Noah Juulsen hasn’t looked great. Rasmus Ristolainen (tricep) is unavailable to begin the 2025-2026 NHL Regular Season, creating a massive hole in the defense for the Flyers.

“We’re looking for people to separate themselves, and so far we haven’t seen that yet. It’s been a camp where there’s a lot of games, and there’s a lot in between games. [In] all fairness to them, a little bit of a different thought process; system change. Sometimes you’re watching guys think too much, and that’s the problem sometimes. Hopefully, guys get aggressive in their reads, and [in] what we want to do. You’re looking for guys who can pick up things, too, quickly. Something might happen in a game where you have to adjust. You’re looking for that, too. We’re looking for those guys.” – Rick Tocchet; 9/29/2025
