John Snowden has been named the 12th head coach in Phantoms history and 5th since the team moved to Allentown in 2014. Joining Snowden behind the bench are assistant coaches Nick Schultz and Terrence Wallin.
“We’re excited to have John along with Nick and Terrence lead the Phantoms,” said Flyers General Manager Daniel Brière in a press release. “This is an important time for our organization with the young talent we have coming through the pipeline, and we believe this group has the right mix of experience, teaching ability, and leadership to guide our prospects. Their impact in Lehigh Valley will be a big part of our long-term success.”
Snowden had previously served as an assistant coach with the Phantoms on Ian Laperrière’s staff over the last two seasons before Laperrière rejoined the Flyers as an Advisor to Hockey Operations.
“I’m honored to be named the next head coach of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms,” said Snowden in a press release. “I’d like to thank Keith, Danny, Alyn and Rob and Jim Brooks for this opportunity. It’s an exciting time to lead this group with the talent the Flyers have in their prospect pool. I look forward to building on the foundation that’s been laid and continuing to help our young players grow and succeed.”
Before joining the Phantoms, Snowden served as an assistant coach with Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL from 2015 to 2018 when they were affiliated with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He then became an assistant coach, and later head coach, of the now-defunct Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL from 2018 until the end of the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season. He led the Growlers to the 2019 Kelly Cup Finals, where they won their only championship in franchise history over the Toledo Walleye in six games. He went on to serve as an assistant coach with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies from 2021 to 2023 before leaving the Maple Leafs organization for the Phantoms.
As for the assistants, at least one name is familiar to Flyers fans. Nick Schultz played for the Flyers in 195 combined regular season and Stanley Cup Playoff games from 2014 to 2017. Schultz then rejoined the Flyers organization as a development coach from 2019 to 2023 and was then promoted to Assistant Director of Player Development the last two years. Schultz also served as an interim assistant coach for the Flyers during the 2021-22 season alongside interim head coach Mike Yeo after the firings of Alain Vigneault and Michel Therrien.
Terrence Wallin, a native of Yardley, Pennsylvania, was most recently the head coach of the ECHL’s Maine Mariners. The Mariners posted a 107-94-14-1 record under Wallin’s watch and qualified for the Kelly Cup Playoffs on two occasions in 2023 and 2024. Prior to becoming head coach, Wallin was an assistant coach for the Mariners for two seasons as well. During Wallin’s playing days, he was once an invite to Flyers Prospect Camp in 2012, donning #77 in a camp that featured Scott Laughton, Shayne Gostisbehere, Anthony Stolarz, and Trevor van Riemsdyk among others who have appeared in the NHL.
