Flyers Draft First Goalie in Three Years, Martin Psohlavec, in Second Round

After selecting a pair of defensemen (Maksim Sokolovskii and Brek Liske) with their first two selections of the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers addressed another position of need by taking goaltender Martin Psohlavec with the 62nd overall pick.

The Flyers earned the 62nd overall pick as part of a trade with the San Jose Sharks during the first round, where they moved pick #21 for picks #27, #62, and #120.

Psohlavec stands in at 6’5” and 185 pounds, halls from Ostrov, Czechia, and is a left-handed catching netminder. He has spent his entire junior career with HC Energie Karlovy Vary in Czechia in the U15, U17, and U20 circuits.

In 2025-26, Psohlavec posted a 31-11-0 record with a 1.92 GAA, and a .928 SV% in 42 games with 8 shutouts. He also suited up in two games for the HC Energie Karlovy Vary in the Czech Extraliga – the highest level of hockey in Czechia.

The 18-year-old represented his country at the most recent U18 World Championships, where he posted a 3-1-0 record with a 1.68 GAA and a .926 SV%.

Psohlavec is the first the goaltender that the Flyers have drafted since the 2023 NHL Entry Draft when they selected Carson Bjarnason and Yegor Zavragin in the second and third rounds, respectively. His addition to to the pipeline should help a relatively thin position group.

Psohlavec was the third goaltender selected in his draft class. The Calgary Flames started the run of goaltenders this year when they selected Tobias Trejbal – another Czechia native – with the 42nd overall pick, which was then followed up by Boston, who took Yuri Ivanov at 56th overall.

The Flyers understood they needed to act quick if they wanted a goaltender as three more were taken shortly after their selection of Psohlavec. The New York Rangers picked Danai Shaiikov with the 67th pick, Nashville took Dmitri Borichev with the 70th overall pick, and the Winnipeg Jets took Samuel Hrenek with the next pick.

As Psohlavec joins the organizational pipeline, he will likely have fellow countryman, Dan Vladař, to help him out as the fellow Czechia native is expected to sign an extension when first eligible on July 1st.
