The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Friday that they had claimed forward Luke Glendening off waivers.
Glendening was initially placed on waivers by the New Jersey Devils yesterday.
After moving Bobby Brink to Minnesota and Nicolas Deslauriers to Carolina, the Flyers were seemingly in the hunt for an NHL-ready forward that could help fill a depth role in their bottom-6.
While it is believed that promising prospect Alex Bump will be recalled this weekend, the Flyers still needed depth on the roster, and they found it in the form of 36-year-old and 13-year veteran, Glendening.
The undrafted forward has been a mainstay on NHL rosters since the 2013-14 season when he broke out with Detroit. Over his 13 years in the league, Glendening has scored 83 goals and 170 points in 916, which included a career-best 23 points in 78 games during the 2018-19 season with the Red Wings.
He spent his first 8 years with Detroit before pit stops in Dallas, Tampa Bay, and most recently New Jersey. He’s a few years removed from playing top-9 minutes, but has provided solid penalty killing minutes, face-off acumen, and veteran leadership.
For his career, Glendening has won 55.6% of his draws, has finished 1,667 hits, and blocked 187 shots. It’s been a down year for the Michigan native, as he’s collected 4 assists in 52 games for the Devils, but perhaps a change of scenery could be beneficial.
His role isn’t expected to be anything more than a 4th line centre.
