Flyers Announce 5 Early Cuts From Training Camp Roster

The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that they have cut 5 players from their training camp roster today, according to General Manager Daniel Brière.

As expected with such a large roster, the Flyers have made their first round of cuts and it comes as no surprise that a few of them were recently drafted in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

The 5 players that were released includes camp invitees Jonathan Fauchon and Sam Sedley, as well as 2023 draftees Denver Barkey, Carter Sotheran, and Oliver Bonk. Barkey and Bonk were both sent back to the London Knights of the OHL and Sotheran was sent back to the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL.

Barkey and Bonk both featured in last night’s 6-0 defeat against the New Jersey Devils. Bonk skated on the second pair with Nick Seeler, while Barkey was featured on the third line with Matt Brown and Wade Allison – originally Cam Atkinson. Bonk skated 18:16 TOI, registered a shot on goal as well as 2 blocks, and was a minus-1, whereas Barkey skated 14:30 TOI, fired 2 shots, and was a minus-2 on the night.

Bonk was drafted in the first round with the 22nd overall selection, Barkey was selected in the third round with the 95th overall selection, and Sotheran was selected in the 5th round with 135th pick. All three are seen as building blocks for the future, with Barkey and Sotheran tabbed as early steals at their respective draft positions.

Fauchon and Sedley both were invitees to Rookie Camp and Training Camp and although they were cut today, they’re both very young and should feature in future plans if the Flyers see a fit. The roster was large to begin with and cuts were expected super early with so many veterans and prospects vying for actual roster spots. It was good exposure nonetheless with Fauchon only being 19 years of age and Sedley only being 20.

The Flyers will skate at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees tomorrow at 10:00am ET and are set to take on the New York Islanders for their second preseason game of the season at 7:00pm ET.
