The Philadelphia Flyers weren’t far away from capturing two points on the road against the New York Rangers but a late collapse sent them to their 5th loss in 6 games.

Gabe Perreault scored the lone goal in the first period before the Flyers took the lead with goals from Simon Benoit and Noel Acciari 1:59 apart in the second frame. Things looked good in the third period before a Denver Barkey penalty led to Pavel Dorofeyev’s game-tying tally and then less than 90 seconds later Tye Kartye scored the eventual game winner on a defensive breakdown in the neutral zone.

Joseph Woll played well but was unable to get his second win of the season after allowing 3 goals on 27 shots, whereas Dylan Garand earned his 6th win of the season making 23 saves along the way.

FIRST PERIOD

The New York Rangers opened the scoring only 4:39 into the game after some solid work from their second line. Marcus Pettersson’s point shot was deflected twice, first by J.T. Miller in the middle of the ice, and then Gabe Perreault at the front for his 5th of the season. The goal most likely does not happen if Oliver Bonk didn’t whiff on his pass attempt right before the Rangers regrouped.

The period came to a close with both teams having fired 9 shots on goal but it was Perreault’s deflection that was the difference. The Flyers had a few good chances against Dylan Garand but nothing to really write home about in a quiet first 20 minutes.

SECOND PERIOD

In a fast moving period, Simon Benoit was able to tie the game with a shot from distance at the 10:10 mark. Tyson Foerster’s hard forechecking was on display to keep the puck in the zone before the Rangers clearance attempt went right to Benoit at the point. The veteran defenseman just fired it with traffic in front which got through a maze of bodies and past Garand for his first goal in 103 games.

The Flyers then took the lead 1:59 later courtesy of Noel Acciari who was in the right place at the right time to deflect a Denver Barkey spin-around pass. They worked the puck around the offensive zone really well before Jamie Drysdale fired it towards the net with a lot of bodies in front. Barkey was able to locate the puck before sending a pass to the front of the net to Acciari for his 2nd of the season.

The period came to a close with the Flyers taking a rare lead into the third period thanks to goals from unlikely sources in Benoit and Acciari. Joseph Woll was also a big reason they took a held onto a lead after making 10 saves in the period.

THIRD PERIOD

With the Flyers holding onto a one-goal lead and 20 minutes away from a regulation win, the third period was a tightly contested battle that didn’t really favour one side or the other until Barkey was called for a slashing minor with less than 7 minutes remaining.

The Rangers tied things up relatively quickly after Pavel Dorofeyev ripped a shot glove-high from the slot assisted by none other than fellow Flyer-killers Mika Zibanejad and Adam Fox. The Rangers won a puck battle along the boards where Fox found Zibanejad, who then one touched it to an open Dorofeyev in the slot for his 5th of the season at the 13:52 mark.

New York then regained the lead only 1:28 later after Tye Kartye walked into the slot and fired a snap shot past Woll’s glove. Fox found a wide open Kartye from his own zone after the Flyers left the middle of the ice open and the 25-year-old made no mistake with his opportunity for his 5th of the season.

The Flyers finally got Woll to the bench for the extra attacker with less than 90 seconds remaining but they were unable to do much of anything with the opportunity as they registered one shot. The Rangers held on and registered their first win after trailing after 2 periods.
