Youth Being Served After Flyers Recall Bump, Gaucher and Knuble

After placing defenseman Cam York on IR last night, the Philadelphia Flyers continued to make roster moves as they decided to call up forwards Alex Bump, Jacob Gaucher, and Cole Knuble ahead of tonight’s contest against Colorado.

Gaucher’s call-up has yet to be made official, however his name has appeared on the NHL’s media site, which likely points to a recall. Anthony SanFilippo believes that means Owen Tippett will be placed on IR to open a roster spot.

With York sent to the IR, the Flyers recalled defenseman Hunter McDonald, but also sent down defenseman Helge Grans and forward Jack Studnicka, opening two roster spots.

Bump, Gaucher, and Knuble featured prominently during the Lehigh Valley Phantoms’ weekend sweep of the Springfield Thunderbirds. Bump scored 4 goals and 5 points, Gaucher scored a goal and had 2 assists, and Knuble scored a goal and an assist.

Bump was sent down to the minors after a rough start in training camp, pre-season games, and the regular season. He was held pointless in 3 games and was the roster casualty when they signed unrestricted free agent forward Michael Bunting.

However, Bump never let that bog him down, as he went to the Phantoms and tore things up with a goal in every single game he played. In just 5 games, the Minnesota native had 7 goals and 8 points, including multiple game winners and was named AHL’s Player of the Week for his efforts.

Gaucher has quietly been one of the Phantoms’ best performers with 4 goals and 8 points in 6 games, having him tied for first on the team with Bump. The 25-year-old assisted on both of Bump’s tallies on Saturday night, which included the overtime winner.

Gaucher has registered back-to-back 20-goal seasons for the Phantoms and is well on his way to a career year if he continues at this blistering pace. He will look to make his season debut tonight, but already has 8 games under his belt when he played in 4 games during each of the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons.

As for Knuble, he had a terrific training camp, so much so that he almost stole a roster spot on opening night. He was one of the final roster cuts due to the surplus of wingers they had at their disposal, but it was understood he’d be one of the first call-ups as long as he continued to perform with the Phantoms – which he’s done with a goal and 4 points.

It will be interesting to see if head coach Rick Tocchet opts to play them all tonight against the Avalanche. There’s already one lineup spot open with Studnicka’s demotion, so two more players would have to step out of the lineup, one of whom is likely to be Garrett Wilson.
