Preview; Game 50/82: Philadelphia Flyers at Colorado Avalanche

(Heather Cattai/Heather Barry Images, LLC)

The Philadelphia Flyers (23-17-9) will try to salvage a second win on their three-game road trip as they take on the mighty Colorado Avalanche (34-5-9) at Ball Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:00pm ET.

The Flyers are coming off an excruciating 5-4 overtime loss to the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday and will be desperate to respond tonight with a victory. Garnet Hathaway could’ve iced the game with an empty net goal but was stripped of the puck while skating to the net and Clayton Keller tied the game in the final minute before also scoring the overtime winner.

“That’s unacceptable what happened tonight,” said Rick Tocchet after the loss in Utah. “It’s not really much to say, you know, that we sunk in pressure situations. Something that we got to get out of this team, right? You’ve got to rise to the occasion. You’ve got to want to be out there in pressure situations and a couple guys sunk in certain situations, so it’s the bottom line. So we’ve got to have to recover from it.”

The Flyers have now lost 7 of their last 8 since their January 6th win over Anaheim. Monday’s win over Vegas has been the lone bright spot in an otherwise dull month for Philadelphia, and now they have to face off against the top team in the league tonight.

The Avalanche own a commanding 20-1-4 home record and are 34-5-9 overall. Nathan MacKinnon leads the league in goals (38) and is tied for the league lead in points (85), Cale Makar leads all NHL defensemen in points (54), and Scott Wedgewood leads the league in goals against average (2.14) while also ranking third in wins (20) and save percentage (.918). Safe to say, Colorado is dominant in all facets of the game and tonight will be the toughest game on the Flyers’ schedule to date.

The Flyers did battle the Avalanche very closely in their last meeting in Philadelphia, losing just 3-2 at Xfinity Mobile Arena on December 7th. Sam Ersson made 25 saves while Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny recorded the goals.

Ersson will get another crack at Colorado tonight and looks for his eighth win of the season. He carries an .858 SV% and 3.38 GAA heading into this contest. This will mark Ersson’s third consecutive start and sixth consecutive appearance in net. Regular starter Dan Vladař is still on injured reserve but could return soon as he has been skating the last few days.
