Flyers kick off home-and-home, back-to-back set against Sabres in Buffalo

(Heather Barry Images, LLC)

The Philadelphia Flyers will be in Western New York tonight as they visit the Buffalo Sabres in the second of three meetings this season.

The first time these teams met back on January 22nd, the Sabres scored four goals in the first period and chased Martin Jones from the net as they beat the Flyers in a 6-3 rout at KeyBank Center.

Jones will start again today and look for revenge for his last outing here with Carter Hart being out with a lower-body injury, while Felix Sandström will back up Jones and then start tomorrow in the rematch in Philadelphia.

The Flyers are coming off a tough 4-0 defeat at home to the New York Rangers on Wednesday, as Sandström made 30 saves but the Flyers offense couldn’t solve Alexandar Georgiev and couldn’t generate a lot of scoring chances outside of the first ten minutes of the game. That game marked a third consecutive loss for Philadelphia.

Buffalo is trying to right their ship too, as they’ve lost four of their last five and are trying to rebound from a 6-2 loss at home to the playoff-bound St. Louis Blues.

News and Notes:

– This is the 191st all-time matchup between the Flyers and Sabres. Philadelphia owns a 97-66-20-7 advantage in the series since the Sabres began play in 1970.

– Cam Atkinson will miss tonight’s contest, his second one in as many games, since being boarded by Washington’s Tom Wilson on Tuesday night. The Flyers’ leading goal and point scorer is hopeful to return tomorrow though, per Flyers interim head coach Mike Yeo.

– The Flyers will get their first look at Buffalo defenseman Owen Power tonight. The top pick of the 2021 NHL Draft had a fantastic year at the University of Michigan and has been impressive so far in his first two games on the Sabres blueline.

Injuries:

PHI – Ryan Ellis (lower-body), Sean Couturier (back), Nick Seeler (lower-body), Carter Hart (lower-body), Cam Atkinson (lower-body), Rasmus Ristolainen (upper-body), Cam York (lower-body), Patrick Brown (upper-body)
