While more than half of the NHL were duking it out during the first round of the playoffs, fans of the Philadelphia Flyers – and the other 13 non-playoff teams – were patiently waiting for Draft Lottery night.

This year’s Draft Lottery was a little different than in year’s past as they showed the whole proceedings live. In previous years, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly would be flipping cards revealing each pick once the ping pong balls had already decided each team’s fate.

After going through the doldrums of yet another failed regular season, the Flyers finished 4th-last in the NHL standings, giving them a very good chance at a high lottery pick. While the odds were stacked against them in landing a top-2 pick, finishing within the top-5 would still land them a top prospect.

Entering the lottery, the San Jose Sharks had the best chance at landing the first overall pick for the second straight year after landing Macklin Celebrini during the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. The Chicago Blackhawks had the second-best odds, followed by Nashville, Philadelphia, and Boston to round out the top-5.

The Flyers carried a 9.5% of claiming the first or second overall pick, 0.3% chance for the third overall pick, 15.4% for the fourth overall pick, 44.5% of dropping to fifth, and 20.8% chance for sixth overall.

In the end, the New York Islanders won the 2025 lottery and will be selecting first overall. They were followed by the San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks, Utah Hockey Club, and Nashville Predators to round out the top-5.

Utah won the second lottery drawing and jumped the maximum 10 spots from 14th to 4th.

Despite having his season cut short due to injuries, defenseman Matthew Schaefer of the OHL’s Erie Otters is ranked as the number one prospect. Following him is a slew of centres in Michael Misa, Jimmy Hagens, Caleb Desnoyers, Anton Frondell, and Jake O’Brien as well as wingers in Porter Martone and Victor Eklund.

Finding a legitimate option to play alongside Matvei Michkov for the foreseeable future is what the Flyers will be looking to find with their pick and they will have a lot of options to choose from.

While Schaefer and Misa will more than likely be out of their grasp, the Flyers can still zero-in on a top tier prospect whether it be a centre like Frondell, Hagens, or Desnoyers or a skilled winger like Martone or Eklund. They will have to wait a few picks and see how things shake out at the very top of the draft but it’s exciting times nonetheless.

The first round of the 2025 NHL Draft will be held on the 27th of June with rounds 2-7 taking place the following day on the 28th.
