http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/ne ... p&c_id=phiQuote: Lefty Cole Hamels logged two innings in his spring debut. The southpaw threw 32 pitches, including 20 strikes, allowing one run on two hits, including Bautista's home run, with two strikeouts and one walk. He experimented with cutters & sinkers in this outing & Dubee is very pleased.

Both of the Phillie's aces have looked...welll,aces,in their spring training starts!Halladay looks reday to deliver, and Cole Hammels has looked re-committed to being one of(if not)our best pitchers! If Hammels can come back after last years debacle, the Phillies will have become that much more the favorites to win the NL,if not the whole thing...

Meh. Halladay was less than Stellar his last outing too. Cole needs to follow this stinkier up with a solid outing though.

Phillies & Manuel are taking a different POV: http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/ne ... p&c_id=phiQuote: But he's not taking any chances. To that end, Hamels has spent most of this spring working on his curve and cutter, using heavy doses of both pitches throughout the Grapefruit League schedule.
Saturday was no different, and at times Hamels looked dominant -- breezing through the first three innings, for example. But at other times he struggled, allowing a total of four runs and five hits in the fourth and fifth innings.
Most of that was due to pitches up in the zone, which hurt Hamels all afternoon. Some of it was due to Mauer.
Either way, the Phillies weren't putting much stock in it.
"I'm really happy with how he's thrown -- very, very happy," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "And I didn't expect anything less. I'm not surprised by it. I'm happy that he came -- without question -- physically prepared for the season and for the spring."
Unlike earlier in Spring Training, when he was working on his curveball and changeup during starts, Hamels is now using those pitches as he plans to during the season. He will no longer just throw them just for the sake of throwing them. But he will still spin off more curveballs than before, using the pitch as a legitimate third weapon next to his fastball and changeup.
Whiffing Jim Thome on a biting curve in the second, Hamels showcased a pitch that has become far more impressive than it was a year ago. He is not afraid to use it in any count.

That's great that he has developed these other pitches, but has he picked up any movement,or speed on his fastball? Is he pitching more agressively,or is he still trying to paint the corners, get hitters to chase outside stuff, and getting bent when the calls don't go his way?

He didn't need any more speed on his fastball. Last year can be attributed to a poor offseason after 2008. He admitted it. He rededicated himself to his off season plan & there's no reason his stuff won't be as good as it was in '08 or better. He's only 25. same thing with trying to paint the corners. Why can't he do that? He has the talent to. I don't recall Cole ever getting bent about calls except for last year. Not in 2007 or 2008. So IMO that goes back to his offseason after 2008. Things weren't going his way so little things like close pitches etc got to him. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... p&c_id=mlbQuote: Cole Hamels has impressed teammates, coaches and scouts this spring, and he could give Philadelphia a stellar 1-2 punch atop its rotation. So even opposing scouts like how Cole looks this spring & FYI this article was written today.
